The Sherston Arts Festival is excited to host a talk with not one but three local authors. Alex Evelyn (The Secret Wild for 9-12 year olds, published May 2022 by Walker Books), Clare Hawken (Jane’s Away for adults, out now) and Lucy Hope (Fledgling for 9-12 year olds, published 4th November by Nosy Crow) will be joining us for an engaging meander through the worlds and characters they have created alongside a look at the three very different ways they have arrived in the publishing world. Sharing their stories followed by questions from the audience it promises to be an illuminating and inspiring peek into the journeys of three exciting new authors. Books will be on sale at the event or bring your own copy to be signed by the author. Refreshments will also be available (cash only for both books and refreshments).

About the book… The Secret Wild

When Fern Featherstone is sent away from the Amazon by her plant hunting parents to live with her Uncle in London, she is worried that the city won’t be green enough for a girl like her. But when she steals a baby plant from the important botanist Oleander Silk, she uncovers a plot to rewild the city in a most dramatic way and the consequences could be …..deadly.’ The Secret Wild, for 9-12 year olds, is to be published by Walker Books in May 2022.

About the book… Jane’s Away

Every marriage has its little secrets. But some secrets are bigger than others… Roger Kurmudge is rather smug about his affluent life and happy marriage. It’s just as well his wife, Jane, doesn’t know about that little indiscretion in his past. But on his retirement day, Jane disappears. Roger’s about to panic. Will he have to sell some shares or – heaven forbid! – the house in Bordeaux to pay a ransom? Worse – has Jane discovered his guilty secret?

Then Jane’s emails start arriving with a list of jobs. Roger doesn’t know why Jane’s gone but he’s sure he can manage her ‘women’s work’ – although it’s harder than it looks. But even if Roger can change for the better, will Jane ever come back? Or has she been keeping secrets of her own? For more details on the book and Clare see here.

About the Book… Fledgling

A dark, gothic adventure set deep in a Bavarian forest, with angels and owls and magic and a boy who isn’t all that he seems to be… A cherub is blown into Cassie Engel’s bedroom during a thunderstorm, triggering a series of terrifying events. Cassie must discover if its arrival was an accident or part of something more sinister.

With a self-obsessed opera singer for a mother, a strange taxidermist father, and a best friend who isn’t quite what he seems, Cassie is forced to unearth the secrets of her family’s past. As the dark forces gather around them, can Cassie protect all that she holds dear? For more details on the book and Lucy see here. Fledgling will be published 4th November by Nosy Crow.
